TUM Citation Guide
Our citation guide will show you how to cite correctly and avoid plagiarism. It is coordinated with the Ombudspersons for Good Scientific Practice at the TUM Compliance Office and is officially recommended as a guideline for the TUM.

Contents of the Citation Guide
- Fundamentals: The Citation Guide explains, on the basis of copyright law and the rules for good scientific practice, why, what and when to cite.
- FAQs: Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about quoting images, unpublished sources, research data, student papers, co-authors, and much more.
- Recommendation for citation styles: Different types of citations are explained (author-year, numeric, footnote), and for each type of citations a citation style is recommended.
- Reference management programs: Various software is presented, as well as information on their availability at TUM.
- Checklists: Here you will find checklists that help to quote protected works correctly and to organize tasks during your thesis project.

Citation Essentials
In line with the motto “Cite it right,” Citation Essentials – Referencing Sources and Citations with Confidence will teach you how to cite correctly and avoid unintended plagiarism. Understanding the fundamentals of citation in academic writing, along with practical tips for applying them, will help you navigate the citation jungle with confidence. Take the course, have your lightbulb moment, and cite without worry!
Citation Exercise
The Citation Exercise – Practice Referencing Sources and Citations focuses on the effective use of direct and indirect citations in the text. We will practice placing in-text references correctly, separating paraphrases from each other, and citing different sources. Strengthen your ability to cite confidently and precisely in your seminar paper, bachelor's, or master's thesis!
