Access to E-Books via OPAC

The University Library's electronic media collections are mostly access-protected due to license regulations. As a TUM member (student or staff) you must log in with your TUM ID via eAccess to use full texts free of charge.

Alternative Access Options

Access for external library users
Our electronic media collections are available for you on library computers in all branch libraries. A remote access to e-media for non-TUM library users is not possible.

Access via Proxy
If you are using a desktop PC with LAN connection within the TUM network, enter the URL http://pac.lrz.de in the automatic proxy configuration of your browser. An additional login with your TUM ID is then not required. Access to e-media via proxy is not feasible when you are online via WLAN.

Access via Shibboleth
You can access some of our e-media services direct via Shibboleth by logging in with your TUM ID. Usually you will find this kind of login option under the label "Institutional Login" on the respective provider's website.

Finding and Using E-Books

You will find our complete selection of e-books in the TUM Online Catalogue OPAC.
Titles available as e-books carry the e-book symbol.

Search in e-book portals

Many e-book providers offer their own portals with advanced search and browsing options. You can find these portals via our database search. However, we usually do not license the entire publishing suite of a provider, but only selected relevant titles.

Please note: In order to access full texts free of charge, you have to authenticate yourself as a TUM member also when you explore e-book portals. You can do this via eAccess or within the TUM-LAN and browser configuration.

In addition, many e-book providers have their own interfaces with advanced search and browsing options. You can find portals for e-book packages we have subscripted to via out database search options.

Read and download e-books

Depending on the provider, you can read our e-books online, download individual pages or chapters. You do not need an e-book reader. As a TUM member you can simply use your PC, tablet or laptop. External library users can access our e-book collection on library computers in our branch libraries.

Terms of Use

If you use electronic books, be sure to note the following license conditions:

You can use full texts of e-books on the user PCs in TUM branch libraries. As a TUM member (student or staff), you can also use full-text anywhere via eAccess.
Full texts may be printed or saved only for personal use and for non-commercial purposes (science, research and teaching).
The disclosure to third parties is not permitted either in electronic or in printed form.
Systematic downloading of e-books or search results, especially by robots, is prohibited.

Failure to comply with license restrictions will be tracked by the publishers and may result in the complete suspension of the campus license for the entire TUM!

Data Tracking by Publishers

Some publishers and providers of scientific information track the search behaviour of users on their websites, create profiles and evaluate the data for their own purposes without the consent of the persons concerned.

How we protect you from data tracking

Authentication technologies used by the University Library for licensed resources do not pass on any personal data to publishers. Our authentication portal eAccess uses a rewrite proxy procedure in which only the IP address of the University Library's eAccess server is transmitted to our business partners.

The institutional login service Shibboleth, another authentication portal used at TUM, offers users the possibilty to check which data is transmitted to service providers; usually this data does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about individuals.

The University Library generally rejects licensing models from publishers or agencies that aim at identifying users or using corresponding technologies.

How you can protect yourself from data tracking

In addition to our authentication procedures (such as eAccess and Shibboleth), many publishers offer personal accounts, e.g. to save settings and research histories.

We recommend avoiding these features if possible, make privacy settings and read the privacy statements of the providers carefully. Most scientific information licensed by the University Library can be accessed without personal accounts with the publishers.

To protect yourself from traditional website data tracking technologies, we recommend to use appropriate features in your browser (e.g. Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection) and to follow the tips provided by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
