Access to E-Books via OPAC

You can find our collection of e-books in the TUM OPAC. Most of it is access-protected due to licensing restrictions. To access full texts free of charge, you must authenticate as a TUM member and log in with your TUM ID via eAccess.

Reading Room Computers
External library users and alumni can access our licensed e-media exclusively on reading room PCs. Please visit one of our branch libraries in person. For licensing reasons, remote online access is not available to library users who are not (or no longer) affiliated with TUM.

Institutional Login (Shibboleth)
For some e-media providers, access is possible directly via Shibboleth. On the provider's website, select the option "Institutional Login" and log in using your TUM ID. Please note that some providers may use different but similar terms instead of "Institutional Login."

TUM LAN (Proxy Configuration)
If you are using a desktop computer with a static IP address within the TUM-LAN, you can access e-media via IP-based authentication, without logging in. To do so, you must set up automatic proxy configuration in your browser or operating system.

Finding and Using E-Books

Searching for e-books in the OPAC

You can find our entire e-book collection in the online catalog TUM OPAC.
You can recognize whether a title is available as an e-book by the “Read online” button.

Searching in e-book portals

Many e-book providers offer their own portals with advanced search and browsing options. You can find these portals via our database portal DBIS. To access full texts free of charge, you must authenticate as a TUM member and start DBIS via eAccess.

Please note: We usually do not license the entire publishing suite of a provider, but only selected, relevant titles.

Reading and downloading e-books

Depending on the provider, you can read our e-books online or download individual pages or chapters. An e-book reader is not required. As a TUM member, you can simply use your PC, tablet, or laptop. External library users can access our e-books at library computers in our branch libraries.

Terms of Use

If you use electronic books, be sure to note the following license conditions:

You can use full texts of e-books on the user PCs in TUM branch libraries. As a TUM member (student or staff), you can also use full-text anywhere via eAccess.
Full texts may be printed or saved only for personal use and for non-commercial purposes (science, research and teaching).
The disclosure to third parties is not permitted either in electronic or in printed form.
Systematic downloading of e-books or search results, especially by robots, is prohibited.

Failure to comply with license restrictions will be tracked by the publishers and may result in the complete suspension of the campus license for the entire TUM!

Data Tracking by Publishers

Some publishers and providers of scientific information track users' search behavior on their websites, create profiles, and analyze the data for their own purposes without users' consent.

How we protect you from data tracking

The authentication technologies used by the University Library for licensed resources do not transmit personal data to publishers. Our authentication portal eAccess utilizes a rewrite proxy method, ensuring that only the IP address of the University Library's eAccess server is passed on to our business partners.

The institutional login service Shibboleth, also used at TUM, allows users to verify which data is transmitted to service providers. The data sets usually do not allow conclusions to be drawn about individuals.

The University Library generally rejects licensing models from publishers or agencies that aim to identify users or use corresponding technologies.

How you can protect yourself from data tracking

Regardless of our authentication methods (such as eAccess and Shibboleth), many publishers offer personal accounts, for example, to save settings and research histories.

We recommend avoiding these features whenever possible, adjusting privacy settings, and carefully reading provider's privacy policies. In general, most scientific resources licensed by the University Library can be accessed without personal accounts with the publishers.

To protect yourself from conventional website tracking technologies, we recommend using appropriate browser functions (e.g., Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection) and following guidelines provided by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
