Open Access Strategy

Generally, a distinction is made between the "green road" and the "gold road" to open access. Both publication options are supported by the TUM.

The green road to open access indicates the republication of a previously published work (by a publisher) on a media server such as mediaTUM.

The gold road to open access indicates the original primary publication of your work on an open access server.

Berlin Declaration

The President of the TUM, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang A. Herrmann, signed on behalf of the Technische Universitäts München the Berlin Declaration.

The Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities(link is external) is one of the milestones of the open access movement.

TUM Open Access Policy

The TUM Board of Management adopted an open access policy to encourage all researchers at TUM to publish their scientific findings and research results in the spirit of the open access movement.

In its fundamental conception as a servant of society, the Technische Universität München stands for excellence in research and teaching. In doing so, it is scientifically, structurally and organizationally oriented towards the highest international standards, among which open access is also ranked.

Following the principle of open access, all research results of scientists at the Technische Universität München are to be made freely accessible throughout the world and thus be rendered as visible as possible. The Technische Universität München supports all members of the university by means of general financial and structural conditions that have been created to achieve this objective.

The Board of Management invites all researchers at the Technische Universität München to publish their research results in accordance with the open access movement. Publications previously published in pay journals are to be made available to the general public as copies on mediaTUM, the media server of the Technische Universität München, as long as this procedure is not contrary to legal restrictions. mediaTUM thereby pools the research achievements of the Technische Universität München, rendering them visible externally.

It is recommended that researchers secure the right for further use of their works with the publisher, concerning future publications. The aim is to enable a secondary publication of the publisher's version on mediaTUM, concomitant with the publishers' release date or with a maximum embargo period of six months after the publication date.

All researchers at the Technische Universität München are encouraged to publish their scientific results in peer-reviewed open access journals. In their capacity as leaders, researchers at the Technische Universität München are specifically requested to also allow their employees to publish in accordance with open access. In recruitment and appointment procedures, open access publications are increasingly consulted for the assessment of candidates.

The University Library of the Technische Universität München, as the operator of mediaTUM, supports and advises university-wide on the implementation of open access.
