FAQ Login

How do I log into the OPAC and my library account?

... with TUM ID

  • TUM Students
  • TUM Employees
  • TUM Guests with TUMonline account

If you study, work, or hold guest status at TUM, you automatically receive a library account. For borrowing, simply present your StudentCard, PersonalCard, or GuestCard.

... with Library Number

  • External Library Users
  • TUM Alumni

As an external user or alumnus, you can also use the TUM library. You’ll need a library card, which you can apply for at one of our branch libraries. Your library number will be provided along with the card (11-digit number on the back of the card).

A New Password is Required for External Users an TUM Alumi!
With the migration to the new library system in January 2025, existing passwords (used with library numbers) are no longer valid. When logging into the OPAC for the first time after the migration, you must create a new password. Please use the "Forgot Password" function for this purpose.

How can I get a library account?

Active TUM Members
If you study, work, or hold guest status at TUM, you automatically receive a library account. You can log in directly using your TUM ID. For borrowing, present your StudentCard, PersonalCard, or GuestCard.

TUM Alumni
Even after leaving TUM, you can continue to use the library. You simply need to update your library account at one of our branch libraries. You’ll receive a library card and a library number.

External Users
Visit one of our branch libraries to apply for a library card.

Why should I log in before starting a search?

When you are logged in, you have full access to all ordering functions.

Why do I sometimes need to log in a second time for e-media access?

Whenever you log in to the OPAC or e-media, you use TUM's web login service (Shibboleth Single Sign-On). By selecting the "stay signed in" option, you usually won't need to enter your TUM ID a second time, as long as your browser remains open.

However, depending on the login sequence, transmitted data, or the publisher's requirements, you may still be prompted to enter your TUM ID again.

External library users and TUM alumni can access our e-media collection on reading room PCs at our branch libraries.

I forgot my password. What can I do?

Active TUM Members: Students, employees, and guests with a TUMonline account
You log in with your TUM ID. If you forgot the associated password, go to TUMonline and use the "Reset Password" function there.

External Users and TUM Alumni:
You log in with your library number. If you forgot the associated password, use the "Forgot Password" function in the OPAC.

For any questions or issues, please contact our First Level Hotline.

Tips for using the OPAC

What can I find in the OPAC?

You will find more than 500 million media from TUM and other academic libraries in our online catalog. It includes all kinds of scholarly materials – both printed and electronic, including:

  • e-books, printed books
  • e-journals, print journals, newspapers
  • papers and articles

How do I find literature on my topic?

Initial Search
The OPAC is suitable as an entry point for thematic searches. Filter functions allow you to narrow down found titles by subject areas and keywords.

In-depth Research
For a more comprehensive search strategy, we recommend using our specialized databases. Literature and information are thoroughly indexed in those search tools. Access information and an overview of which databases we offer for your subject area can be found at: www.ub.tum.de/en/datenbases

How can I order and borrow literature?

You can see in the search results which branch library holds a specific item and whether it is currently checked-out or available for loan.

Order button in the availability tab
Click on the title of the desired item to open the availability display. Use the "Order" button and select your preferred pickup location. We recommend to log into the OPAC before starting your search to have full access to all ordering functions.

No orders within a branch library
Ordering is only possible for items from other branch libraries or closed stacks. If an item is located in open stacks at your preferred branch library, you can take it directly from the shelf and borrow it on-site.

How can I access e-media?

Active TUM Members
You can access our e-media 24/7 from anywhere. Simply click the "Read Online" button and, if prompted, log in with your TUM ID to authenticate as a TUM member.

External Users and TUM Alumni
You can access our e-media collection on reading room PCs at our branch libraries.
