Venue SAHA – Meeting and Festival Venue
Saha is one of the oldest brick buildings in Otaniemi campus. It offers variable space for wide range of events. The hall takes 120 persons seated; standing it takes up to 160 persons. In years 1954 – 1955 built, Saha is designed by architect Alvar Aalto. Clear, rectangular and gently gabled Saha represents the practical and humane post-war industrial building design of Alvar Aalto.“Saha” means sawmill, and it really served the Helsinki University of Technology campus when the construction was bustling in the 1950s and 1960s. The roof of Otahalli, the first building, was made of the area’s forest. Later, the students of the department of forest product technology were educated in Saha.In 2005 the function of Saha came to an end and the building was changed into an exhibition, event and meeting facility. Even after the renewal, the original sawmill´s airiness and the human feeling of the wood still remains in the building. There are still original parts inside the building, especially the view of the ceiling, which are telling the history of Saha.

Study Tour Day

Date 4th June 2014 (Wednesday)
Time  9:00 – 22:00
Venue Fiskars Village and Mustion Linna
Fiskars (Finnish: Fiskari) is a village in the town of Raasepori in western Uusimaa, Finland. The village is the site of the former Fiskars Bruk, which was founded in 1646 and gave rise to the company Fiskars (founded in 1649) and has since become an international corporation. The Fiskars Village developed around the ironworks founded by German-born Petter Thorwöste in 1649. The ironworks also produced copper. In 1822, John Jacob von Julin bought the ironworks and founded a fine production facility in 1830 and Finland’s first workshop in 1836. The development of the industrial community was fast, and the factories and workshops produced utility items from scissors and puukko knives to ploughs and power transmission devices. In order to transport the products, a narrow-gauge railroad from Fiskars to the Pohjankuru harbour was in use from 1891 to 1952. The history of the Fiskars company begins from the Fiskars Bruk, but the company no longer has active factories in the village. Fiskars is proud of its origins in the craftmanship in the village.Nowadays, the factory is a lively centre of Finnish art and design. There are about 600 people living in the factory area and it is very popular among artists, artisans and designers. In 2014 Fiskars will celebrate its 365th anniversary.

“Svartå Manor” (Finnish: Mustion Linna) is situated close to the small village called Svartå or Mustio in Finnish. The Manor is one of the most precious manor houses in Finland with a history of more than two hundred years. It was built between 1783 and 1792 by Magnus Linder II. The manor house is the largest non-ecclesiastic wooden building in Finland. The architecture is a mix of the two consecutive styles rococo and neo-classicism and the Gustavian style dominates the interior. Special features in the main building are the parquet floors, one made in four kinds of wood and on the second floor is a unique bedroom where one king (Gustav III) and two emperors (Alexander I and Alexander II of Russia) have slept.Probably the most glorious time in Svartå Manor was during the ownership of Hjalmar Linder in the first years of 1900. He owned altogether 64 000 hectares of land and one of the first cars in Finland, which he brought here in 1902. Among others the Swedish painter Louis Sparre and the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius were Hjalmar Linder’s guests in Svartå.The wooden castle is embedded in one of the biggest private historical parks of Finland. Originally it was designed as a baroque park in 1787 but in the late 19th century Friedolf Linder renewed the park into an English style of park. He planted many exotic trees from all over the world, which are unusual species for Finland. The park is nowadays a retreat for the soul with its winding paths, romantic bridges, statues, follies and the unique water lily path over the water. The park and the castle are situated close to the old picturesque village of Svartå, which was an iron foundry village from the late 16th century. Many traditional red and yellow houses are left from the times of the ironworks.

Venue Kulosaaren Casino
The Brando (Kulosaari) inhabitants of the early 20th century were a young and enthusiastic bunch eager to fill their lives with amusements and to present their beautiful, picturesque island to visitors. It was for this purpose that this classically beautiful seaside restaurant was built in 1915. Perhaps the most beautiful spot on the whole island, the islet rocks of its southernmost tip, was chosen as the location of the Casino building, designed by famed Finnish architect Armas Lindgren. The first restaurant-keeper was the Swedish-born Mrs. Paterson-Falden. Legend has it she always had some strong liquor hidden underneath the counter for the visiting gentlemen, even during the prohibition era.Over the years, Kulosaaren Casino has seen many changes under many different restaurant-keepers. In time, it has also grown into one of the most popular locations in Helsinki for banquets and festivities, especially during the summer season. Every year, Kulosaaren Casino is the setting of numerous crayfish parties, weddings, birthdays and corporate banquets.
