How to get to Stockholm

Stockholm – the capital of Sweden – is easily accessible from abroad. Several airlines offer services to Arlanda airport about 40 km from the centre of Stockholm.

Local transportation

From the airport you can take a taxi, an Airport coach or the Arlanda Express train.

There are taxis available just outside the airport terminal. Taxi fares to the town centre costs about 475 SEK. Be sure to negotiate the price. Foreign visitors have been known to pay far too much! Some taxi companies have fixed prices though they may vary between companies. 475 SEK is the fixed price for the company “Taxi Stockholm”

The Airport Coaches Flygbussarna run just outside the terminal every 10 minutes. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs 95 SEK for a single journey and 175 SEK for a return ticket. End stop is at the Central bus terminal close to the railway station in the centre of town.

The Arlanda Express train departs every 15 minutes. The journey takes 20 minutes and costs 200 SEK for a single journey and 380 SEK for a return ticket. The train arrives at the Central train station.

Moving around in Stockholm

Stockholm has a very good public transport system. There are frequent buses in the town centre and to the suburbs. The Metro T-banan serves both the inner town and the suburbs. There is a “journey planner” available on the net.

Please note that it is no longer possible to purchase tickets on board the buses. Tickets are sold in news stands, at the Metro barriers, at SL Centres (SL=Stockholms lokaltrafik/ Stockholm Local Traffic) and at commuter train stations. There are also ticket machines in a number of other locations.

It is always cheaper to buy prepaid tickets and the longer the period of validity of the ticket, the cheaper it will be. There are also travel cards available for 1, 3 or 7 days.  A pre-paid ticket slip with 16 units costs 160 SEK, a 3 day travel card costs 190 SEK.

Taxi

Taxis can be hailed on the street or booked via telephone or the Internet.
