Returning Library Items

At the circulation desk

Via book drop

At the Branch Library Weihenstephan, students and staff of the WZW can return library items during closing hours to the book drop at library foyer, provided their StudentCard or PersonalCard is registered at the ITW Helpdesk [3]. Please note that items returned via book drop may not be checked in the electronic library system until the next working day.

By mail

You may also return borrowed items by mail. Please make sure that:

  • Your parcel is securely packaged and sufficiently stamped.
  • You only ship from a EU member state due to customs regulations.

Disclaimer

Please note that the University Library does not accept responsibility for any damage or loss occurring during shipment. Please remember that the books remain your responsibility until they are delivered and checked in. Allow sufficient time for return by mail to avoid overdue fines.

Due Date Reminder

The library system will send you courtesy e-mails to remind you to return borrowed items on time.

Please note: The University Library is not liable for the receipt of emails. Failure to receive reminders, for whatever reason, does not release the borrower from their obligation to pay for media reclaim costs.

Keep track of return deadlines:

  • You can check all current due dates and renewal options in your library account in the OPAC [1].
  • You will receive automated email notifications [2] with borrowing and return receipts as well as return reminders.

Media Reclaim

If for any reason you are unable to return items on time, we are legally obligated to suspend your borrowing rights temporarily and to charge you for media reclaim costs [4]. The amount is determined by law ("Bayerisches Kostengesetz [5]").

Please contact us immediately after receiving a reclaim request und return the library items without delay. Otherwise, you risk receiving further reclaim notices, which will cause you increasing costs.

Overview on Costs and Payment Options [6]

Media Reclaim Procedure for TUM Employees

If you, as a TUM empolyee, overlook the return of library items on time, we will send you return request notices without charges. To avoid costs for your school, please return the overdue items within the next few days at one of our branch libraries.

If repeated return requests are ignored, we will initiate the replacement of the library items. The acquisition costs will then be charged to your school.

Damage or Loss

In case of loss or damage to borrowed books or supplements, you are obliged to compensate for the damage. Please file a loss / damage report [7]. This will save you from a media reclaim procedure and a possible temporarily suspension of your borrowing privileges.

Once you have completed the form, please submit it to the library staff. Should you have any questions, please contact our Media Reclaim Team [8].
