Publishing Fund

The gold road to open access is the original primary publication of your work in an open access journal, which means that the articles are immediately available for free. Depending on the particular journal, publication is either free or follows payment of a publication fee.

To support open access, the TUM created an open access publishing fund which is open to all TUM members. To be eligible for financing you need to fulfill the following conditions:

  • „Corresponding author“ or „submitting author" must be a TUM staff member and specify the "Technische Universität München" as affiliation.
  • Your article will be published in an open access journal, which provides free access to all articles without any subscription fee immediatelly after publication and ensures the quality of articles through a peer review process. A list of eligible journals can be found at the Directory of Open Access Journals.
  • You have demonstrably no access to other funding to finance an open access publications.
  • The article-processing charge (APC) does not exceed 2,000 € per article (including VAT). Partial reimbursement is not possible.
  • Your article processing charge invoice has been issued after October, 18th, 2013.
  • Each funded publication should contain a reference to the DFG-funding, for example: "This work was supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Technische Universität München within the funding programme Open Access Publishing."

If you want to make use of the TUM publishing fund for your open access publication, please use the funding enquiry webform.

BioMedCentral, ChemistryCentral, SpringerOpen, and IEEE

Article processing charges (APC) for publications in open access journals from BioMedCentral (including Chemistry Central), SpringerOpen, and IEEE will be covered automatically by the publishing fund without prior registration, when the conditions mentioned above are fulfilled and when you have submitted your article to the journal websites using an institutional computer within the TUM IP range.Further information about the web browser proxy configuration are available here: set up proxy configuration

What Types of Journals will not be covered by the Publication Fund?

The conventional gold road to open access must be distinguished from "hybrid open access," in which a particular article usually available for purchase is made freely accessible world-wide due to the payment of article processing charges. Article-processing charges (APC) for papers published in hybrid open access journals are not covered by the TUM open access publishing fund, since this publication model entails additional subscription fees for full access to all articles.

However, via TUM University Library licenses agreements you will receive a discount on a hybrid open access journal distributed by the following company:

SCOAP3 / Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics
We take part in SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics). The consortium is converting key journals in the field of high-energy physics to open access at no cost for authors. The following SCOAP3 journals are defined as fully open access journals:

The following journals are defined as "broad band" journals:

For these journals payment of the APC will only been taken over for articles concerning High-Energy Physics content, when.the article preprints had been deposited in one of the main HEP categories of arXiv.org before submitted to the publisher. Here you will find the relevant arXiv categories according to the "technical specifications":
