  FERNANDO PESSOA

  (1888 - 1935)

Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa was born on 13th June 1888 in Lisbon, but left for South Africa in 1896 after the
death of his father and the re-marriage of his mother. He attended various schools, where he received an English
education. Returning to Portugal in 1905, he settled in Lisbon, where he started an intense literary activity. A
supporter of the Portuguese Renaissance, he later broke away from it and in 1915, together with Mário de
Sá-Carneiro, Almada Negreiros and others, strove to renew Portuguese literature through the creation of the
magazine Orpheu, a vehicle for new ideas and new aesthetics. Due to his capacity for «otherness», he created several
pseudonyms (Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos, Ricardo Reis, Bernardo Soares, etc.), signing his works according to
the personality of each name. He wrote in various magazines, published a book of his poems written in English and,
in 1934, won a literary competition sponsored by the Secretariat for National Propaganda, category B, with Mensagem,
which was published in the same year. His premature death in 1935 left the great part of his oeuvre unpublished. He
is considered one of the greatest Portuguese poets.
