Helena Almeida

Born in 1934 in Lisbon, where she lives and works.

Helena Almeida’s work came to the fore in the 1970s and has since been shown to convey an effective confluence of disciplines and attitudes. Photography, video, performance, sculpture, painting and drawing are joined in an artistic practice sealed by self-representation.

Almeida studied painting at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisbon and began to exhibit in the 1960s, with her first solo show coming in 1967, in Lisbon. She has since exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, among which stand out the Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Gulbenkian, Lisbon (1987); Fundação Serralves, Porto (1995); Casa de América, Madrid (1997); CGAC, Santiago de Compostela (2000); Drawing Center, New York (2004); and the Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon (2004). She has also taken part in various biennales, from São Paulo (1979) to Sydney (2004) and including Venice (1982), Istanbul (1997) and Santa Fé (1999), among others. She is represented in a large number of public and private collections both in Portugal and abroad.
