The main theme of the conference will be Scholarly Communication in Focus. The sessions include the following subjects:
In 1997 the city of Trondheim will be celebrating its millenium. The Planning Committee has already put the
IATUL conference on the official list of major events taking place in the beautiful city in 1997.
LOCATION
The conference will be held at Gløshaugen (Sentralbygget) at the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. Trondheim is located approximately 500 km north of Oslo.
GETTING TO TRONDHEIM
BY AIR
Trondheim is served by the Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD) situated 35 km northeast of the city.
The only international connection is between Copenhagen and Trondheim. Most international
connections to Norway go to Fornebu Airport, Oslo (FBU). There are several domestic flights
between Trondheim and Oslo every day.
FROM THE AIRPORT
Coaches leave the airport for the city when you have got your luggage. We recommend the coaches,
the transport is fast, comfortable and cheap (NOK 45 or USD 8). The coaches offer direct transport
to some of the hotels in the city. Taxi fares are expensive (NOK 400 or USD 60). It is possible to
preorder a taxi (fly-taxi) with your air ticket for NOK 200 per person.
TO THE AIRPORT
Coaches from the city for the airport 75 minutes before the times of departure for the flights.
BY TRAIN
Day and night trains from Oslo and Sweden via Storlien.
LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
The distance from the hotels in the city to the conference at Gløshaugen is about 2 km or 25 minutes
short walk. We recommend the short walk through Bakklandet with its old timber buildings along
the east side of the river Nidelva to Gløshaugen. It’s easy to get around in Trondheim by bus.
A single ticket for adults costs NOK 16 (please pay exact amount as no change will be given!).
CAR HIRE
There are several international companies at the airport and in Trondheim city offering car hire.

CLIMATE AND DRESS
We do have summer in Trondheim in June-July, but we can’t promise anything about the weather
or the temperature. On average the temperature is between 14 and 20 degrees C. Be prepared
for both. We hope for sun, but we might have rain.
LANGUAGE
The official language of the conference is English.
OPTIONAL AND PERSONNAL TOURS
Assuming that some people want to arrive early or stay after the closing of the conference we have
arranged two trips which give you the opportunity to see more of Norway.
For those of you who want to go further north to see The Midnight Sun, you must contact a travel agency.
If you go to Mo i Rana, by train or boat from Trondheim, you can see the national library where all Norwegian
documents are delivered and stored in a mountain hall, and the Midnight Sun can be seen from the mountains
in the neighbourhood. Another journey is to visit the North Cape by the coastal boat or by plane. We can recommend
a good travel agency which you also will find located on the campus - University Travel Agency (Flyspesialisten).
They can assist in making and reconfirming travel reservations and tickets.

CONFERENCE PUBLICATION
A Conference proceedings will be issued after the conference and a collection
of the abstracts will be made available at the conference. These abstracts will also
in time be mounted on the IATUL Web.

Those who have answered our call for papers and who have sent us an abstract will be contacted about the
conference programme and other matters concerning the papers and their presentation.

Social arrangements and special programs for accompanying persons have been planned.
There are several interesting sites to visit, and a number of special arrangements within art and
culture connected to the celebration of the city. The list of possibilities is long in Trondheim:
Nidaros Cathedral. One of Scandinavia’s largest buildings from the Middle Ages,
erected over the grave of St. Olav. Work on it commenced in 1070, but the oldest
parts still standing are from the 12th century. Mostly in Gothic style, though the oldest
parts are in the Roman style. Magnificent stained glass windows. We are planning tour
and concert in the Cathedral.
The Archbishop’s Palace. Scandinavia’s oldest secular building. Work on it commenced
in the 12th century. We hope to have a reception here, hosted by the Mayor of Trondheim.
Munkholmen - the Monks’ island. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very
early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monasteries in Scandinavia. In 1658
it was converted into a fortified prison. Today this is a popular place for cultural and social events.
Veitene. The narrow streets and alleys that were typical of the old Trondheim, now with modern shops and houses.
Ringve Museum of Musical History. Instruments from all over the world are collected here and
presented by guides who are also able to play them. The Museum is in Ringve Mansion
at Lade, a mansion from the 18th century.
Tröndelag Folk Museum, Sverresborg. The museum is situated in picturesque surroundings
on the site of king Sverre’s castle, dating from around 1180. It recaptures the atmosphere of local
villages in the 18th and 19th centuries; architecture, everyday life and folklore.
Other museums such as the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, the National Museum of Applied Art,
the Science Centre and the Trondheim Art Gallery.
Fishing trip/Fjord tour on the Trondheim Fjord. Fishing tackle for hire on board.
Granaasen Ski Centre. This is where the World ski championship ‘97 will be arranged, however
the Granaasen centre also includes the world’s biggest summer ski jumping hill.
We plan to see some of the elite jumpers in action.
The Glöshaugen campus of the University. We hope to present some ongoing technological research.
The libraries within technology and architecture (at Glöshaugen), Humanities and
Social Sciences (Dragvoll and Lade) and Science (Glöshaugen and Rosenborg).
Visits will be arranged.
Statoil - the national Norwegian oil company has it’s
research centre in Trondheim. A visit has been arranged.
